currently if you install an updated game definition with a set version that breaks compatibility, then the sets have to be patched then reinstalled (which could take a while depending on the game) as they disappear from the “installed sets” list.

Perhaps when installing a game definition update which increases its version number such that it breaks set compatibility, have a message prompt pop up asking if you have a patch file to install alongside the game definition — this way you don’t have to reinstall the sets again.
